Dealing with Disappointment

Life can be so unpredictable. It’s like one minute you’re happy-go-lucky then next minute you’ve just received news that someone close to you has died. Dealing with disappointment is a daily struggle. I feel it’s very important to know how to deal with mishappenings. People oft say ‘it’s just a bad day, not a bad life’ but it’s much easier said than done. Today on the blog we’re chatting a bit about dealing with disappointment in everyday life. If you don’t know how to properly deal with it, it can drastically affect your productivity and prevent you from living a meaningful life.

Not to sound cliche or overly optimistic but I think disappointment has a lot to do with your mindset. This is pretty simple because when things happen in our life (good or bad) we can either view it as positive or negative. This thought process is really where it’s at because when we constantly view things as negative, it drains us, puts us into depression, and hinders us from living to achieve our true purpose. Let’s look at an example. You worked extremely hard on a project for school. Your teacher gave you a C but you think you deserve an A. You can either

  1. Beat yourself up about it. Think of yourself as inadequate, incompetent and not smart; or
  2. You can take heed to the corrections identified by your teacher and use them as guidance to make your upcoming projects better.

I feel as though mindset has a huge part to play in dealing with mishappenings that occur in our life. ‘Everything happens for a reason’ sounds so cliche but have you ever gone through some difficult times and months later you look back and realize how it has made you grow? Life is all about a learning experience and until we realize that we would continue to allow little things to hinder our productivity and affect us negatively.

To be honest, I am an optimist. But I’m also very realistic. I like to promote positive vibes and positive energies always. This also applies to our thought patterns. Cultivating positive thoughts is very important to your success as an individual. When you constantly see things as negative, how is this benefitting you? Negative thoughts only hinder you from being productive and you know I’m a proponent for efficiency!

You see the thing is this: we cannot constantly allow everyday things to constantly let us down. You actually cannot work at maximum efficiency when you’re depressed, sad, or if you’re feeling any sort of displeasure. This is why we need to learn ourselves and we need to be able to efficiently deal with things as they arise. Taking a mental health day once in a while is necessary. Taking some alone time is also very important. Just remember that feelings associated with disappointment become cautionary when it constantly affects you being able to function efficiently daily.

Here are some things to remember when you feel disappointed:

  1. Your thought process will help you to be able to deal with disappointment better. Try cultivating positive thoughts when dealing with everyday mishappenings in life.
  2. See life as a learning experience.
  3. Sometimes all you need is a little time. Time heals most, if not all, things.

You’ll have some bad days every now and then, that’s normal! Things may happen that is way beyond our control and we need to learn how to adequately deal with them. Don’t let anger, depression and sadness constantly consume you and get the best of you. Inhale, exhale and make the best of every situation. Until next time, xoxo.
